10 Ways To Improve Indoor Air Quality

images (2)

According to the EPA, Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is two to five times worse than outdoor air. Indoor air quality is important to your health and the comfort of your home. Listed below are the ways you can improve the air quality in your home!

  1. Eliminating The Source Of Pollution/Reducing Emissions: Some containers can be sealed or covered, eliminating the source of pollution. Others can be adjusted to reduce the emissions released into the air. Source control is a more cost-efficient approach as opposed to increasing ventilation. Increasing ventilation can increase energy costs.
  2. Ventilation: To lower the number of pollutants inside, open a window to let in outdoor air. Ventilation helps remove/dilute indoor airborne pollutants coming from indoor sources. It also reduces the level of contaminants.
  3. Cleaned Air Ducts: Due to dust, debris, allergens, and mold, air ducts need regular cleanings. Scheduling an annual duct cleaning can reduce allergies, asthma, and more.
  4. Pet Dander: Pets can carry dirt, dust, and more into your home. To prevent those substances from getting into your air, regularly brush or clean them off before going inside. Your pet will appreciate this extra attention.
  5. Clean Your Chimney: Wood burning in the fireplace can negatively impact your health. The smoke can buildup and cause dangerous side effects if your chimney doesn’t have proper ventilation. Before lighting a fire, be sure your chimney has been thoroughly cleaned.
  6. Keep it Clean: Dust and other allergens can quickly cover floors and other surfaces throughout your house. Dust and vacuum regularly to cancel out these problems.
  7. Doormat/Shoes: Since dirt and other substances can easily transfer from one area to the next, they can easily be brought into the house. To ensure this doesn’t happen, brush your feet off on a doormat outside your home. Also, take your shoes off right when you get inside so you don’t track the dirt and other substances throughout the house.
  8. Laundry: Make sure to launder new fabric before using it to ensure the chemicals are washed off. Common household fabrics include curtains, towels, and linens.
  9. Smoke: Smoking gives off a ton of pollution, as well as second-hand smoke. Keep your home smoke-free to help your health and Indoor Air Quality.
  10. Monitor Humidity Levels: Make sure your humidity level stays below 50%. Doing so can help prevent mold from developing.
