Here are a few questions to ask yourself if you’re considering becoming a plumber!
1. Common Sense – Do you have it?
When you’re a plumber, common sense is key. You have to think outside the box. All factors must be taken into account in all plumbing situations. Is the leak you’re dealing with the only one, or are there multiple? Did you remember to shut off the water supply before pulling the toilet or the sink? Whenever all factors aren’t taken into consideration, the work done could easily not be up to par.
2. Are you fit?
This is basically a requirement. We aren’t saying you must be in a bodybuilder or “cover of a magazine” fit shape. It’s a requirement that plumbers crouch down under sinks, lift heavy water heaters, pull well pumps, etc. These all take strength and sometimes agility. Many situations cause plumbers to push their extra limits daily. Plumbers should be in good physical shape to ensure their chances of injury are minimal.
3. Are You Mechanically Inclined?
Do you like to figure out how things work? Do you think outside the box when trying to solve problems? Do you enjoy troubleshooting?
Every day, plumbers face situations where the way they were taught doesn’t apply. What if you arrive at a customer’s home and there isn’t room to move around their water heater? You must understand the ins and outs of each system they work on when assessing the job you have to do.
4. Can You Talk to People?
This is another requirement. Whether you’re doing new construction on a commercial job site or repairs at a customer’s home, you’ll need to be able to talk to your customers.
You’ll need to be ready to explain any issues the customer might not know of, let them know the repair steps, or even how the job is coming along according to the timeline set. If it’s a new installation, you may need to explain how to use the equipment you’ve just put in.
5. Are You Dedicated to Your Work and Career?
Dedication is key. When you say you will be somewhere at 10 a.m., you need to stand by your word and be there at 10 am. Your customers depend on you to be reliable because a job that might be simple for you to take care of could easily be something they think will take forever or include a ton of work. It’s your job to ensure they know you will take care of them.
