7 Reasons Why Your AC isn’t Working

Summers seem to be getting hotter than ever, and that’s the most inconvenient time to find out that your AC is refusing to do its job! Here’s a rundown of the seven most common problems that cause the air conditioning unit to not work at the optimum level.

The Thermostat Needs New Batteries

Yes, sometimes the solution can be right under our noses, the most basic thing that we ignore. Replace the batteries in your thermostat and see if that helps your AC. Without a display, it could be possible that the AC is just on Fan or Heat and actually making the house warmer. Set the thermostat to cool.

The Disconnect Switch is Off

Check both disconnect switches, indoor and outdoor. Make sure they’re both ON. That could be all your AC needs! Imagine how impressed your family will be when they see you fixed the problem. Bask in the glory and don’t tell them how easy it was.

A Tripped Circuit Breaker

Check all the circuit breakers—it could be that the one supplying electricity to the AC has tripped. Usually, circuit breakers trip when there is an overload on the system, so if this happens again, try to switch off other electronic equipment that uses too much electricity. If the problem persists, call an HVAC expert to help figure it out.

A Blown Fuse

A blown fuse is not something you should attempt to fix yourself. This is where you will need help from a professional. The good news is it doesn’t take long, and they will have the AC running in no time.

A Blown Transformer

This will also require a professional’s help. A blown transformer can be the result of faulty wiring or a bad contactor. Have the HVAC technician look at the wiring and other sources for the problem as well.

Dirty Coils

There are two coils per AC. One is in the indoor unit and one in the outdoor. Both need to be serviced and cleaned once every season so that the AC works efficiently. Coils that are too old might need to be replaced.

Dirty Filters

Filters are what collect all the dust and grime from the air and filter in cool, clean air. No wonder they get so dirty! In this list of usual suspects, a dirty filter is the most common of them all. Like coils, when the filters get old enough, they should be changed out. Replace them with fresh, clean filters.
