6 Questions to Ask Your HVAC Contractor

Our HVACs are an important part of our lives. If they break down, it disrupts our daily routine and wreaks havoc on our lives. Getting a new unit installed in your home is a big deal, which is why it is important to determine that you have hired the right person to install it. Here is a list of key questions you should ask a contractor before hiring them for the job.

What is wrong with the existing unit?

A good contractor will ask you questions about the age and usage of the unit and conduct a thorough examination. They will explain what you can do to fix the problem in simple terms and give you tips on how to handle some things on your own. If a contractor suggests getting a new unit without even looking at the old one, that’s a pretty big red flag.

Which HVAC do you recommend?

The efficiency of an HVAC system is measured through its SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) rating. The higher the rating, the more efficient the machine is. The extent of the cooling produced by the AC is divided by the number of watts it takes to produce that cooling; the higher this number is, the greater the efficiency of the machine.

Lennox units have a SEER rating of 14. If your contractor explains the SEER rating system to you and recommends a unit with a high rating, that’s a good sign.

Can you show me a copy of your HVAC license?

All HVAC contractors legally operating within your state must have an up-to-date operating license. Not only does this mean that their business is legit, but also that they have had training and know what they are doing.

You cannot get a license without a minimum number of training hours where you learn both theory and practice of HVAC installation and maintenance.

Can I see a copy of your liability insurance?

All contractors will have insurance coverage of some sort. The extent depends on the specific insurance. Thoroughly examine the policy and call the insurance company to confirm how much the coverage is.

What does the project quote include? What does it exclude?

The contractor should let you know details of what you are paying for and what parts are included in the warranty. They should also provide you with a detailed breakdown of costs. It’s okay to ask for everything in writing.

When can you start work?

Ideally, the contractor will be willing to start right away and can finish in a day or two. Ask them specifically when they start and how much time they will need.
