Step Five: Prep Your Water Heater

The final step in your preparation for fall weather is one of the most important! Your water heater is a year-round system, but it becomes even more necessary in the cool months!

Because you use your water heater when showering, using the sink, washing clothes and more, maintaining your water heater is a top priority.

5-Step Series to Prepare Your Home for Fall Weather!

Your water heater is about to get used a lot more, with the colder temperatures and holiday guests. So what can you do to make sure it’s ready for all this use? Follow the steps below to prep your water heater for the fall weather!

Step One: Start by making sure your water heater isn’t obstructed by any objects that might pose a safety hazard, as the pipes can become extremely hot.

Step Two: Drain your water heater and clean out any debris that has settled in the tank. To do this, you’ll need a long garden hose that you’ll attach to the outlet that is at the bottom of the water tank. Make sure to NEVER drain hot water, and ensure that your valve at the top is closed. The water will filter from the house out into the desired area.

Step Three: Wrap the pipes in heating insulation tape. This can save energy by keeping the pipes warm as the water transfers from the tank to your appliances.

Step Four: Insulate your water heater! By insulating your water heater, you prevent heat loss as well as cold air from entering through exposed areas in your basement. You can purchase insulation blankets and jackets to ensure that you’re getting the most out of your water heater all season long!

We hope you’ve enjoyed these simple tips and have put them to good use in your home! As you prepare your house and everything in it for the fall, remember to call in the experts when there is a job that seems as though it might be more difficult than you initially anticipated.
