If you neglect to maintain your sump pump, it may not be there for you when you need it most!

If you have a crawlspace or basement, your sump pump is one of the most important parts of your home. If your sump pump is kept in good condition, it will be ready to go when you need it. If not, then it might not perform if there’s a need for it!

How does a sump pump work?

A sump pump is a divide put into your basement. If water leaks into your basement and rises to a certain level, the sump pump activates and drains water out of the basin until the level is lowered once more.

These are some tips on things to do annually or even twice yearly to ensure your sump pump is set up and running correctly!
  • Check the power source for the pump. It should connect to a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) for the most safety.
  • Inspect the cord to the pump, looking for any wear and tear.
  • Make sure the pump is upright and level. When it runs, it can cause the unit to tilt. So confirm that it is level to be safe.
  • Fill the basin or pit to the top with water, which should cause the pump to start. This is just a test to be sure the pump is working.
  • Remove the pump from the basin and clean the grate at the bottom. Sometimes it can get clogged or blocked which can compromise it functioning correctly.
  • Check on the drainage pipes that take the water out of the system. All joints should connect tightly and drain to the right areas. The main line should extend into your yard and point away from your home! Also, make sure this line is clear of any debris.
