How To Know If Your Main Sewer Line Is Clogged

Most people don’t think about their home’s plumbing system very often—after all, if all is working as it should be, you shouldn’t have to. However, it’s important to keep an eye open for issues indicating a possible clog in your main sewer line. That particular piece of plumbing is the most important in your home and can cause major damage to both your house and wallet if not kept working correctly.

Causes of Plumbing Clogs

There are a few different factors that are the common culprits behind clogs to main sewer lines. In old homes especially, the pipes buried underground in yards are often aged and corroded. This makes them extra susceptible to damage caused by tree roots (which can crush pipes or even grow inside them) or shifting ground.

Another common reason behind clogs is improper use of drains. Flushing feminine hygiene products, face wipes, and other items not meant to be flushed (if you have young children, the list of possible items gets a lot longer) down a toilet can cause backups. Grease or fat poured down a kitchen drain will also solidify and build up, eventually causing a clog.
