Spring HVAC Checklist
Use Our Spring HVAC Maintenance Checklist for Ultimate Peace of Mind
As the weather begins to warm up, many of us feel the need to do some spring cleaning, and the inside of your home isn’t the only thing that needs it. Here are nine ways to ensure your HVAC system stays in tiptop shape this spring:
1. Change Your Air Filter
Your air filter has the important job of acting as a barrier between you and exposure to harmful indoor air contaminants. It’s essential to replace your air filter at least once every three months, as you would be surprised how quickly it can become clogged when exposed to allergens, such as pollen and bacteria, especially during spring.
2. Install a Programmable Thermostat
Consider installing a smart thermostat. It’s one way to keep your HVAC system running efficiently and reduce your energy costs as we head into spring and summer. Programmable thermostats help maximize your HVAC’s energy usage, and they can extend your comfort system’s lifespan by optimizing temperatures and reducing the stress on your system.
3. Schedule HVAC Maintenance
Your air conditioner accumulates dust and dirt during the year, making it less efficient and costing you more in utility bills. Add a lack of regular AC tune-up and maintenance, and you can count on your heat pump or air handler breaking down during the hottest time of the year.
Avoid a comfort system disaster and schedule HVAC maintenance with a professional. F.H. Furr will perform a complete 25-step inspection of your home’s cooling system to ensure it’s ready to take on the heat.
4. Clean Away Debris
Remove all leaves, branches, dirt, and lawn tools from around the air conditioner. This will improve airflow around the unit and maximize energy efficiency during summer. If you have any shrubs, trees, etc., around your air conditioner or vents, trim them so they won’t block airflow as they grow.
5. Inspect Your Furnace, Heat Pump & Air Conditioner
Inspect your heating and cooling systems for signs of damage and regular wear and tear. Loose wires, chipped fan blades, leaks, corrosion, etc., are all issues you should have inspected by a professional. Rather than waiting until later to fix them, repairing them now can protect your system from further damage and improve the unit’s performance.
6. Inspect & Clean the Drains
Remove all dirt, debris, leaves, etc., from your drains. Keeping your drains free and clear of obstructions will help ensure proper drainage and protect your system from damage and malfunctions.
7. Check the Airflow
If you have central AC and a furnace, you’ll want to inspect your ducts for signs of damage, breaks, loose hangers, etc. You should also look in the ducts to ensure they’re not full of dust and other debris. They should be professionally cleaned every three to five years.
Verifying that everything is tight, secure, cleaned, and sealed will improve airflow through your registers, which helps keep your home properly ventilated and creates the comfortable climate you desire. This critical step maintains proper ventilation while improving your HVAC system’s energy efficiency.
8. Test Your Thermostat
Testing your thermostat and updating any programmable settings isn’t difficult and will improve your home’s energy efficiency. Visually inspect the wires, change the battery, and adjust your settings to match your desired climate and comfort.
If you don’t already have one, consider investing in a smart thermostat. These will give you greater control over the operation and performance of your HVAC systems.
9. Open Your Windows & Doors
Our last tip is to open the windows and doors. This will help flush out stale air in your home and make it feel less stuffy and more comfortable as spring weather and refreshing rains arrive.
