No Hot Water? F.H. Furr Can Fix That Today

If you own a house, you likely own a water heater. Most homeowners probably don’t spend much time thinking about their water heater until, one morning, you go to take a shower and there’s no hot water!

Despite their almost-constant use all day, every day, water heaters generally stay maintenance-free for years, with average water heaters lasting at least 10 years. Potential problems can include:

  • No hot water: This could be caused by several things depending on if you have a gas or electric water heater. Both are designed to include built-in safety devices. If you have a problem, it’s extremely important to have a skilled technician service your unit, despite the built-in safety features. And please, never tamper with or disable any water heater safety device for any reason.
  • Inadequate hot water: If your water heater is operating properly and you’re still running out of hot water, the unit may not be the right size for your home. F.H. Furr’s water heater experts can determine the best model and size for your hot water needs. If you notice water leaking around the base of the unit, it’s usually not a good sign, but doesn’t necessarily mean you need a new unit. If you see any amount of water around your water heater, have it inspected as soon as possible to prevent further water damage or expense.
  • Other problems to look out for:
    • Rust-colored water
    • Rotten egg odor
    • Low rumbling or popping noise
    • High-pitched whining

If water heater repair isn’t an option, F. H. Furr proudly stocks major brand water heaters to serve your water heating needs. We can install water heaters that provide hot water for every size and type of home.

Frequently Asked Water Heater Questions and Answers

It could be several reasons, from your water heater being too small, in which case you may need a larger capacity model, to low gas pressures.

Again, it could be a number of reasons, from your water heater being too small, in which case you may need a larger capacity model, or you may need to increase the temperature on your thermostat. But be careful, as increasing the temperature can lead to burns and scalding.

Another possible cause could be the increase of lime or sediment buildup in your tank. Draining this buildup could help.

Either your valve has failed and requires replacement or your water temperature is set too high, in which case you need to turn down the thermostat. Your water pressure level could also be too high. Try using a pressure-reducing valve in the supply line.

Many water heaters use a low-quality valve that can be difficult to close tightly. Close the valve by using slip joint pliers, being careful to not apply too much force, resulting in the valve snapping off. Another possible cause could be that the valve has failed and requires replacement.

Most water heaters last over 10 years, but it’s a good idea to start researching for a replacement after approximately seven years of usage.

TIPS:

  • To make your water heater last longer, try setting the temperature to no more than 115°F. This will provide comfortable hot water for most uses and could add a few years to the life of your water heater.
  • Another way to extend the life of your water heater is to remove sediment that impedes heat transfer and lowers the efficiency of your unit. To do this, drain approximately a quart of water from your tank every three months. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations based on the type of water tank you have.
